Amarla Handmade was created to share the work of Colombia’s indigenous artisans with the world. The culture of the makers is handwoven into every bag, hat and strap.
Aluna is a term used by the indigenous Kogi of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, to refer to the world of the invisible or spiritual, of pure thought, of pure idea, of intelligence. It is a concentrated thought which connects the human spirit and the universe.
On one level it means thought on another ocean. We speak of thought as an ocean, as something primordial that precedes creation itself. The entire cosmos, for them, was created in Aluna, a transcendental space. Aluna is what makes life possible. It is the mother of life. In the beginning there was only Aluna.
